Ocean Pride

PZ 134: A 42' counter-stern lugger built by Henry Peake of Newlyn in 1919 with an engine and a foremast stepped in a tabernacle. She was one of two known counter-stern luggers in Mousehole and was decommissioned in 1991 and finally bought by her present owner Leslie Rowe of the Dock Inn, Penzance.  She is moored in Penzance wet dock and is seen regularly in Mount's Bay, the Scillies and at many maritime functions. She was previously owned by Ian Childs and before Ian, the Downing family and originally the Brownfields.

The picture below is of Ocean Pride being built at Henry Peake's yard at the Tolcarne in Newlyn. Counter or elliptical sterns were introduced in one or two boats in the 1880's such as St. Michael (PZ 55) shown here leaving Penzance circa 1895. The OP was originally designed to be 50' when built by the Peake brothers, but after they fell out it was cut back to what one of the brothers could afford. The postcard is of the OP in Mousehole harbour - exact date as yet unknown.

July 2010

The new owner of Ocean Pride is Mathew Wall who kindly informed us on 31st July 2010 of his acquisition. She is presently at Rye harbour in East Sussex near to where Mathew lives, for a refit, and the intention is to move her back to the West next year.

He describes his trip from Penzance and plans for the future re-fit:-

"The trip back from Penzance went surprisingly well bearing in mind she hadn't done much recently.  There was three of us aboard so it was comfortable from a watch-keeping point of view.  We had a few minor issues, lack of electricity and therefore navigation lights as we passed south of the Isle of Wight at night!  A good look out required!

Anyway she is now safely moored at River Brede Moorings in Rye and work will commence in earnest next weekend.  It will be me doing most of the work such as complete new coachroof/wheelhouse, thats if the wheelhouse stays (good shelter, bad design) refitting the interior to make her habitable and then the hull in the spring!  I have a feeling I am going to be busy!  Any help and advice greatly appreciated.  I am pondering the interior at present as this is a blank canvas at present.  I am also deciding on the fate of the Baudoin engine.  Before the trip back I had decided it would be going but it performed sterling service en route and so I am now of two minds.  It seems very reliable and I like the fact it's so basic but it is HUGE and in the wrong place! It could yet come down to the toss of a coin."

Thank you very much Mathew for all the information - MH
