* Luggers Built by Falmouth Marine School *
A one year intensive course on Traditional Boat Building was started and originally run by Sarah Powell. This involved building a Cornish working boat traditionally from lofting to launching. The Marine School and National Maritime Museum Cornwall entered a unique partnership to combine their knowledge and resources to enable the traditional skills of the area to be recognised and built upon for the future.
Around twenty students are engaged on the courses from all backgrounds and age groups and many progress into employment within the boat building industry.
During the first year two open decked scaled down luggers of around twenty feet were built and completed within the course time and are now sailing for all to enjoy. Here you can see one of them, the completed Silver Harvest.
In 2004 the Happy Return was asked to take part in the Falmouth Marine School Traditional Boatbuilding Course for the first time and has now become part of the syllabus and there are some images of these students on the Happy Return here.
Verity and Veracity were the two luggers from the 2006 course and the detail can be seen here.
Footnote - March 2010: With great regret we have been informed that this course which was so popular and provided employment opportunities for so many has now been withdrawn from the syllabus.
We have kindly been contacted by the owner of one of Falmouth Marine School's luggers - the "Celia Elisabeth" with an interesting and comprehensive list of the lugers built whilst the course was operating and this significantly increases the number of luggers sailing our waters.
We are pleased to include this list on our site and is included as a pdf file for your reference.
Many thanks once again to Peter Morgan of Penzance for this information.
