Restoration of the Deck Fittings & Hatches

Eye Bolts : Raft Irons : Hatches : Sweeps

Eye-Bolts

There are some shots on deck and others down below to show the fixing detail. We have taken some bolts through the deck forward amid-ships and then through the deck beams,  and through the covering board in various places port and starboard abreast and aft of the
mast.

Similarly, with the mizzen mast bolts, although strictly speaking these more usually went through the bulwarks as the load is not great.

Raft Irons

September 2003: The raft irons, raft crutches or oar crutches in place - these were always port side on the rail and used to stow the two oars or sweeps and the bowsprit and in Mounts Bay the "raft" of spare sails. Here they are being used to stow the topsail and yard. The bundle of spare sails bent and rolled up on to their yards or "raft" were also stowed on the deck port side under tarpaulin lashed to the side with a wooden grating underneath to keep them off the water on deck.

We shall fit another pair starboard to hold the sweeps and extra spars. This is an added safety factor as they can support the crew above the rail in difficult sea conditions.

Hatches

First pictures showing the scottle with the fore mast and wooden wedges in place. The fish hatch and rear hatch prior to the fitting of the companionway are also shown. Since the scottle won't be used for lowering the fore mast during pilchard driving, a forward hatch has been made over it. Individual boards over the fish hatch have been fabricated and numbered. The companionway can be seen in the later pictures and a section for this is also on the fit-out page.

Sweeps

The students of Falmouth Marine School made the sweeps for the Happy Return and members of the Association are seen here officially receiving them.
